Coach’s Corner with Head Coach Phil Smith
With over 50 lads training last night and the season fast approaching, now seemed like a good time to sit down and write a few words about how things have been going.
I have to say, I’m absolutely delighted with how pre-season has gone. The energy around the club has been fantastic, and you can really sense the excitement building as we get closer to kick-off.
Getting Kitted Out
It’s been a busy time off the pitch, not least because our new TKR playing and training kit has finally arrived! The lads look the part in it, and I think it really shows how far we’ve come as a club. None of this would be possible without our incredible sponsors, so I want to give a huge thanks to Trailfinders, Stanlo Construction, Zepbrook, Limpopo Biltong, The Haven Arms, Latitude 45, and Gameplan. Their continued support means everything to us.
Fresh Faces and Early Success
Recruitment has gone really well this summer. We’ve brought in 12 new players, and I’m pleased to say they’re all settling in brilliantly. It’s always a bit nerve-wracking wondering how new signings will gel with the existing squad, but these lads have fitted in like they’ve been here for years.
Our first pre-season run-out was a real statement of intent. We put 46 points on a strong Twickenham side, winning 46-26, with our skipper Lewis Stedman leading from the front and bagging a couple of tries. Performances like that get everyone excited about what we might achieve this season.
Coaching Team Gets Stronger
I’m also delighted that Mike Williams has joined our coaching team. He’ll be helping out with the second team on Saturdays, and his experience and knowledge will be invaluable. It’s great to have that extra support, especially as we’re trying to maintain high standards right across both teams.
Behind the Scenes Heroes
I can’t talk about pre-season without mentioning the work that goes on behind the scenes. Rob Williams deserves a massive pat on the back for getting 94 lads registered on GMS. It might not sound glamorous, but that sort of organisation is absolutely crucial to everything we do.
The social side of things continues to go from strength to strength too. We’ve got a barbecue planned for next week, and these events are just as important as what happens on the pitch. Rugby’s about community, and that’s something we never want to lose sight of.
Ready for Action
Looking ahead, both our 1st and 2nd XV will be taking on High Wycombe at Trailfinders Sports Club this Saturday, 30th August. It’ll be our final chance to fine-tune things before the season proper gets underway, and I’m confident the boys will be well prepared.
The hard work over the summer is done. Now it’s time to see what we can achieve when it really matters. I can’t wait to get started.
