1871 1sts secure promotion with statement victory
Ealing Trailfinders 1871 1sts 48–15 Hampstead
Ealing Trailfinders 1871 1sts confirmed their promotion to Regional 2 (Level 6 of the RFU league pyramid) in emphatic style with a bonus-point victory over Hampstead under the Friday night lights at Ealing Trailfinders Sports Club. Roared on by a crowd of around 300, the result ensured they stay top of Counties 1 Middlesex with a game to spare, making them champions regardless of the final fixture.
Ealing started at pace, continuing the momentum from their previous high-scoring win, and opened the scoring through George Emmerson after sustained early pressure. Harry Vidler added the conversion. The forwards then took control, with Leo Codrington-Lambert forcing his way over from close range to extend the lead and secure an early platform.
Hampstead, arriving in fourth place and carrying strong attacking intent, responded with a well-worked try from a penalty lineout move, but Ealing quickly reasserted control. Cillian Corkery added another score, finishing a sharp attacking passage, with Vidler again accurate from the tee. A penalty from Vidler pushed the lead further before Hampstead struck again just before half-time to keep the contest alive at 24–10.
The decisive phase came early in the second half. Josh Steadman’s powerful break forced a penalty and yellow card, and from the resulting field position Ealing drove over through a dominant maul, finished by Albert Stoute, with Vidler converting to secure the crucial bonus point. Hampstead briefly reduced the deficit, but Ealing’s response was immediate and decisive.
Emmerson added his second try of the evening before Josh Steadman finished strongly in the corner to underline Ealing’s control of the game. The highlight followed late on, as Carlos Duarte collected a perfectly weighted cross-field kick to finish a superb team move, with Vidler adding the extras to close out a 48–15 victory.
Beyond the result, the occasion carried added significance as it marked the final appearance for the club of long-serving No 8 Will Day, who departs after a lifetime with Ealing Trailfinders 1871. Reggie Elliot-Jones was named man of the match for a consistently powerful performance, with flanker Toby Holt also making a strong impact throughout.
This win completes a remarkable season for the 1st XV, securing promotion to Level 6 and setting up new challenges next year against established sides including Old Priorians, Beaconsfield and Marlow. It also reflects a wider club achievement, with both the 1st and 2nd XVs earning promotion and training attendance consistently exceeding 40 players.
